Ankole Diocese Malaria Free Families 2020.
The prevalence of malaria in Uganda and Ankole Diocese in particular has gone down but not eliminated. Ankole Diocese Health units still report cases of malaria monthly, for this reason therefore, Ankole Diocese supported by COU, Planning Development and Rehabilitation PDR is carrying out activities to have Malaria Free Families by 2020.
Malaria is a serious and sometimes fatal disease caused by bites from the female Anopheles mosquito, which then infects the body with a parasite Plasmodium falciparum. People who get malaria are typically very sick with high fevers, shaking chills, and flu-like illness. Although malaria can be a deadly disease, illness and death from malaria can usually be prevented through;
- Vector control
- Reduction of Mosquito population
- Destruction of Malaria Parasites
- Health education and community mobilization
The project is being carried out in 3 sub counties of Bubare, Rubindi and Kabuyanda in 10 Parishes of Ankole Diocese. (Nombe, Mirongo, Rweibare, Buyenje, Rwentanga, Rubaare, Mugarustya, Kashaka Kanwyamaizi and Kisyoro).
100 VHTs have been trained to carry out various activities including iCCM (Integrated Community Case Management) in Communities among other prevention and control methods.
Ankole Diocese Health Cooperative.
A cooperative is a group of people united voluntarily to meet their common, social and cultural needs and aspirations through a jointly owned and democratically controlled enterprise.
It started because people always needed health care and it was always expensive for them to get it. Many delay seeking care until they are so sick which is very dangerous or by the time they sought care, it was so expensive, they would sneak out of the hospital to avoid bills. But when lots of people pay little money four times each year, a large pool of money is collected. This money is paid to the health care provider so that when people get sick they can go for care. Once you pay your premium on time, you can go for care you need when you need it.
